“Why the combination of Family Office and Trust?” This is a question we have been asked since the very beginning, and we welcome the opportunity to share our perspective.
What is a trust? Why a trust?
Trust, much like wills and insurance, are longstanding legal tools that originated in the West. Their introduction into Asia and use in family succession, however, is a comparatively recent development. While they entered Asia later, their effectiveness in family succession has already been repeatedly demonstrated — from historic families such as the Rockefellers and Kennedys, to contemporary cases including media leader Rupert Murdoch and founders of major Chinese technology companies. A trust offers tax efficiency, creditor protection, and intergenerational succession, among other key advantages.
As international regulatory environments tighten, high-net-worth individuals are increasingly focused on tax efficiency and compliance in wealth transmission. Trusts are supported by well-established trust law spanning more than a century, making them a legally robust, globally recognized structure. Hong Kong’s trust services have evolved into a mature international wealth tool, safeguarding assets, supporting capital growth, and enabling smooth succession — earning widespread trust and adoption. This legal framework has stood the test of time and rigorous scrutiny.
Most importantly, a trust enables us to deliver long-term support and loyal stewardship, embodying our long-termism philosophy as a family office. Private wealth and family succession are systemic, complex, and long-term undertakings — not matters of one or two years, but of five, ten, twenty, thirty years, and in many cases, perpetuity. Focusing only on short-term results while overlooking long-term goals often leads to suboptimal outcomes. True success requires enduring commitment, broad perspective, and consistent execution — demanding the highest standard of “long-term service” from a family office.
Long-Termism and the Bridge We Build
As a trustee, BIPPO bears a legal fiduciary duty and long-term loyalty obligation to our clients, regulated and safeguarded by trust law. Beyond this legal foundation, we embed alignment of interest into every service guideline, workflow, and internal mechanism. This ensures that both our firm and our team are empowered to prioritize long-term, shared success with clients over short-term gains. “Long-term companionship” is not only our responsibility — it is our promise and our unwavering commitment.
At the same time, we recognize that while trust structures have been widely used overseas for family succession and governance for decades, they remain relatively new to many Chinese high-net-worth families. Understanding is only the first step — correct application is a journey. Thus, Chinese clients need a bridge and interpreter to help them master this “Western technique,” harmonize it with Eastern family values, and achieve true East-meets-West execution in family governance and wealth planning.
The “B” in BIPPO symbolizes Bridge — the essence of who we are. We connect across cultures and languages, align personalised needs with specialist solutions, and serve as the structural link — the mortise and tenon — joining Chinese families with the world’s premier resources and ideas in private wealth stewardship.
“Inclusiveness, mutual respect, and the ability to listen — these define BIPPO’s culture. We aspire to be the bridge that connects each client’s unique needs with global, diversified professional services.”
— Elizabeth Zheng, Managing Director, BIPPO Family Office
